When the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted their initial crash test on the , the electric SUV performed exceptionally well in almost all aspects. However, it fell short in one area - its headlight performance.
The revised headlights were implemented in February of this year, maintaining the strong illumination while eliminating the blinding glare, resulting in a top "Good" rating. This seems to be a hardware modification, meaning EV9s manufactured before February 2024 will not be eligible for the award (as hardware changes cannot be made over-the-air).
In addition to the improved headlights, the EV9 received "Good" ratings in other test categories such as small and moderate overlap tests, updated side impact test, forward crash prevention, seat belt reminders, and child seat anchor access.
Although the EV9 now holds the Top Safety Pick award, it has not yet achieved the higher Top Safety Pick+ status due to pending testing of the updated moderate overlap crash test.
