The company's expansion into the world of classic sailing vessels began in 2008, thanks to Oliver Berking's passion for vintage yacht restoration. The collaboration between Robbe & Berking and Mercedes-Maybach for their 150th anniversary celebration showcases the luxury Maybach S-Class inspired by the famous Sphinx 12mR yacht. The exterior of the Maybach S 680 reflects the colors of the restored Sphinx yacht, with Nautical Blue Metallic and Manufaktur Patagonia red complemented by a white coach line.

The opulence continues inside with Crystal White Nappa leather seats, door cards, and headliner, accented with walnut trim and aluminum details. The special one-off Maybach S 680 also includes exclusive features like Manufaktur sills with red illumination, Burmester surround sound, and electric comfort doors at the rear. This collaboration is not the first between Maybach and Robbe & Berking, as the luxury automaker has adorned its vehicles with silver goblets from the silversmith since 2002.

As for the history of the Sphinx yacht, built by German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen in 1939, it has a rich and storied past. The 70.5-foot yacht, classified as a 12 Meter R, was a prominent contender in sailing competitions like the America's Cup from 1958 to 1987.

After serving in the German naval fleet as a training vessel, the Sphinx was meticulously restored, leading to the creation of the unique Mercedes-Maybach S 680 inspired by its legacy. The tale of the Sphinx's journey and the enduring partnership between Robbe & Berking and Mercedes-Maybach exemplify a blend of craftsmanship, history, and luxury that transcends generations.
