Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to compete with Tesla by launching an electric version of the CLA four-door coupe next year. Following this, they plan to introduce a related SUV to rival Tesla's Model Y.
According to reports from Automotive News, Mercedes-Benz will unveil a new SUV in the first half of 2026, based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA) which also underpins the next-generation CLA.
While the name of the upcoming SUV is still a mystery, sources suggest that production of the next-generation CLA coupe will start in October 2025.
The MMA platform is designed to accommodate petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrains. In addition to the new SUV and the CLA, the platform will also be utilized for a wagon and another SUV model.
Mercedes-Benz is streamlining its Entry Luxury range to focus more on customer preferences, reducing the number of models from seven to four.
Production of the MMA vehicles will begin in Germany and China, with the company aiming to cater to discerning customers with precision.
A prototype of the new-generation CLA coupe was showcased at the Munich Motor Show last year, featuring a rear-mounted electric motor with 175kW of power and a two-speed transmission.
While specific details about the battery are yet to be disclosed, Mercedes-Benz promises a range of over 750km on WLTP tests and an energy consumption rate of approximately 12kWh per 100km.
The Concept CLA Class boasts an 800V electrical system that can add 400km of range in just 15 minutes of charging, along with bi-directional charging capabilities.
With these advancements, Mercedes-Benz is making significant strides in the electric vehicle market, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Tesla's offerings.
