2024 Ford Ranger and Everest stripped of important features

Drivers in Australia who purchase the latest Ford Ranger and Everest models may be surprised to find some specification changes when their vehicle arrives.

The popular ute and SUV have undergone modifications for 2024 which include the removal of certain standard features, such as the hands-free power tailgate on the Everest. Ford Australia discreetly implemented these changes in a bulletin to dealerships, only providing full details upon inquiry from CarExpert.

A spokesperson for Ford stated, "We make changes to the rollout of certain features based on a range of factors, from external market evaluation to customer demand," without elaborating on the specific reasons behind the removal of the hands-free power tailgate. The Everest will still include a power tailgate on select grades, albeit without a kick sensor. As for the Ranger, certain features like auto high beam, Ford MyKey, and optional accessories have been removed.

However, Ford Australia also highlighted additions to the features list for both models, such as standard zone lighting and Pro Trailer Backup Assist. These changes for Ford customers are reminiscent of the industry-wide trend of 'de-contenting' during the COVID-19 pandemic and chip shortage. Many brands had to reduce high-tech features dependent on microchips to keep production lines running.

The backlash against 'de-contenting' is not new, as similar cost-cutting measures were seen in the 1990s by Japanese carmakers. Despite these changes, Ford continues to offer a range of features and options for buyers of the Ranger and Everest models in Australia.
